Wood damaging insects and marine creatures

In this reference book, all important aspects of preventive and combative wood preservation are compiled and presented in an understandable way.

A knowledge-oriented part contains the wood science basics, explanations of the use classes and detailed descriptions of the most important wood-damaging fungi and insects, supplemented by information on other harmful organisms. The practice-oriented part deals with structural and chemical wood preservation, modification and water repellent treatment of wood, surface treatment and wood preservation including damage diagnostics and restoration. For all topics, the legal, normative, and technical regulations as well as important technical publications have been taken into account and listed in extensive source lists.

In the third, revised and expanded edition, the latest parts of the wood preservation standard DIN 68800 from 2019 to 2021, current editions of relevant WTA bulletins as well as changes in building law (e.g. technical building regulations) and in wood preservative approvals have been taken into account in particular.

The book is both teaching material and guidebook and reference work for practice and is aimed at trainees, students, architects, civil engineers, building contractors and experts in wood and building protection. The application of the wood protection technical knowledge contributes to the correct use of the renewable raw material wood.

Damage due to faulty construction with wood

For the author, wood is one of the most beautiful building materials. He is interested in architectural "lighthouses" in timber construction from recent times as well as typical local historical timber constructions. When used correctly, wood as a building material is suitable for many structural and design tasks and meets high visual standards. However, certain construction rules must be observed in order to guarantee damage-free buildings for many years. Tilo Haustein uses examples and many pictures to explain which type of wood is suitable for which application and that there is no universal construction timber that can always be used everywhere. Main topics are wood moisture, wood pests and the natural durability of wood as well as measures for wood protection. On the basis of selected cases of damage to windows, exterior wall cladding, half-timbering and balconies, planning and execution errors are explained. Once the properties of wood have been understood and taken into account in construction, a service life of 100 years and more for wooden structures is not unusual, but common. A technical book for planners, experts, executors in timber construction as well as enthusiasts of timber structures.

The title is part of the specialist book series Damage-Free Construction, in which the entire field of structural damage is presented. Experienced building experts describe the most common building damage, its causes and remediation options, as well as the state of the art. The volumes each deal with a single structural part, a structural element, a special structure or a particular type of damage.

Wood damaging insects and marine creatures

Wood protection should prevent a reduction in value or a destruction of the wood by the infestation of harmful organisms or environmental influences and ensure the longest possible service life. Wood protection ensures that the building material wood is not broken down too quickly and unintentionally into its basic products. A wood preservation adapted to the requirements is thus not only of economic importance, but also fulfils an important ecological function.

In a comprehensible form, all important aspects of preventive and combating wood preservation are compiled and presented in this textbook. In addition to the natural scientific basics of wood, the wood pests that are predominantly found in practice are presented and characterized in pictures.

Besides the description of fungi and insects, the resulting findings on the protection of wood are the focus of the considerations. The current legal, normative and technical regulations are considered. Further fundamental references to the damage diagnosis and measures for damage removal are pointed out and evaluated. It addresses itself therefore to training and students and also to architects, civil engineers, building executors as well as experts in the wood and building protection. It should be a useful aid for clarifying the everyday challenges of wood preservation.

Wood damaging insects and sea organisms

The natural origin of wood, a renewable building material, makes it fundamentally different from other building materials. Wood is integrated into a natural cycle process and is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors are ultimately repeatedly reduced to their elementary components. During the use phase, e.g. in construction, wood is an important carbon store; wood use is climate protection. Understanding the degradation processes is the basis for effective and environmentally friendly wood protection.

In a comprehensible form, all important aspects of preventive and control wood protection are compiled and presented in this textbook. In addition to the natural scientific basics of wood, the following topics, which are mainly used in practice, are also covered. wood pests to be found. In addition to the description of fungi and insects, the resulting findings on the protection of wood are at the centre of the considerations. Thereby the current legal, normative and technical regulations. In addition, basic information on damage diagnosis and measures for repairing damage are pointed out and evaluated. This book is intended to be a textbook as well as a guidebook and reference book for practical use. be. It is therefore aimed at trainees and students as well as architects, civil engineers, building contractors and experts in wood and building protection. It is intended to be a useful aid in clarifying everyday wood preservation challenges.

On the diagnosis and integrated control of wood-destroying insects with particular consideration of the checkered beetles (Coleoptera, Cleridae) as their natural antagonist in historic buildings

Wood is a natural and versatile raw and building material that is often attacked and destroyed by living organisms. In addition to fungi, insects are important destroyers of wood. The nail beetle, also known as woodworm, is a widespread pest in Germany. It perforates wooden art objects, stairs, furniture, roof beams and old buildings.

Since chemical means have disadvantages for the fight, one tries to proceed with the help of natural enemies against the Nagekäfer. The used monitoring with paper stickers and glue traps makes it possible to recognize pests and beneficial insects in wood protection. The investigations have shown that the predatory multicoloured beetle may be a suitable candidate for control. Laboratory and breeding trials with this beetle have been undertaken and the results have been summarised in this book.

Damage due to faulty construction with wood

For the construction of durable wooden constructions, the respective wood properties must be observed and certain construction rules must be observed. The author describes the various properties of wood, names suitable wood species for different applications and presents structural wood protection measures. Main topics are wood moisture, wood pests and the natural durability of wood. On the basis selected damage examples, which cover among other things windows, external wall linings, framework and balconies, planning and execution errors are explained and rules for damage avoidance are pointed out.

The title is part of the technical book row damage-free building, in which the entire area of the building damage is represented. Experienced building experts describe the most frequent building damages, their causes and reorganization possibilities as well as the state of the art. The volumes each deal with a single part of a structure, a structural element, a special structure or a special type of damage.
